Join us for an exclusive tour of the Dassai Blue Sake Brewery in Hyde Park, NY, led by project architect David Coon,AIA from Pelli Clarke & Partners. This state-of-the-art facility, crafted for the renowned Japanese sake brand Dassai, is an exceptional blend of tradition and innovation. Attendees will gain insights into the art of sake-making, exploring everything from the Koji room to the fermentation tanks, as well as the architectural and landscape design elements that make the brewery unique.

The tour includes a detailed look at the brewery’s architectural design, which beautifully integrates traditional Japanese motifs and construction methods, alongside landscape design that merges classic Japanese aesthetics with the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley. The experience concludes with a tasting of Dassai Blue's premium Junmai Daiginjo sake, paired with a curated food selection. David Coon’s recent work includes the Asahi Shuzo Brewery in New York — the first US-based brewery for Japan’s oldest sake producer. In his decades at Pelli Clarke & Partners, he has contributed to numerous international projects, including the Petronas Towers, and several mixed-use developments in Tokyo: the Toranomon-Azabudai district, the Ark Hills Sengokuyama Tower, and the Muromachi Chibagin Mitsui Building. He is an Associate Fellow at Branford College at Yale University, and an advisor to first-year Yale Undergraduates. David holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Pennsylvania State University.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

June Williamson RA, ASSOC. AIA, LEED AP is Director of Graduate Architecture at the Spitzer School of Architecture at The City College of New York/CUNY, where she has been on the full-time faculty since 2008. She is an international expert on the suburban retrofitting, a.k.a. the uses of good urban design in the redevelopment, rehabilitation and regreening of obsolete suburban built form. She is coauthor with Ellen Dunham-Jones of the 2021 Great Places Book Award-winning Case Studies in Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Strategies for Urgent Challenges (Wiley), a long-awaited sequel to the first book in the series, Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburbs. She also wrote Designing Suburban Futures: New Models from Build a Better Burb (Island Press), contextualizing and documenting an urban design ideas competition for Long Island and New York.

 

Victor Body-Lawson, FAIA, is principal of Body Lawson Associates Architects and Planners (BLA), an acclaimed architecture, interiors and urban design practice founded in 1993 and operating in the United States and globally. His international portfolio includes works in multifamily housing, religious and commercial buildings, historic preservation, interior design, and recreational and health facilities. A noted leader in responsive, collaborative community solutions with an emerging design signature, Body-Lawson is recognized for his ability to empower people in under-resourced communities through their public spaces and buildings. He is also an accomplished artist and visiting critic at Yale and Columbia. Current projects include the 740-unit affordable mixed-use campus, The Peninsula, Marcus Garvey Village in Harlem, and the acclaimed, recently completed Home Street Residences in The Bronx. From his groundbreaking Erobograph Apartments to his new and promising works in New York, Baltimore and Kumasi, Ghana, Body-Lawson offers insightful perspectives on equitable urban development.

 

Willy Zambrano, FAIA, LEED AP, established Zambrano Architectural Design in 2005, a small design studio, where he began focusing on multi-disciplinary design services and a diverse range of building design typologies embodying resiliency and sustainability to enhance the community’s fabric, provide comfort and wellness to its end users. His award-winning studio enabled him to pursue international projects such as the Lima 2019 Pan American Games (COPAL). Willy has been a long-standing, active AIA member, participating and leading at the local, state and national levels to improve the quality for his fellow architects, elevate the role of the AIA and helping change the face of the next generation of professionals. Willy Zambrano, FAIA, will be the AIANYS 2023 President- Elect.

 



Andrew Heumann is a software developer building the next generation of digital tools for architects. Beginning his career as an architectural designer at firms including NBBJ and Woods Bagot, his passion for computational design led him to a senior researcher position at WeWork where he focused on the automation of design and layout processes. Today, he is part of the team building Hypar, a new platform for architects, engineers, and construction professionals to take advantage of the power of automation and generative design.


 


Karl Hansen serves as a Project Manager at River Architects. Upon joining the firm in 2017, Karl soon after earned his CPHC and has since enthusiastically tackled many high performance projects ranging in scale from residential to commercial. He currently serves as Vice President of the Phius Alliance - Hudson Valley (now NYS) Chapter. Karl earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arizona where he first began to develop his interest in metal fabrication.

 

Jim Dolan, P.E., CEM, BCXP, LEED AP is the Principal in Charge of Energy Engineering Services for OLA Consulting Engineers. In this role, he oversees all energy audits, energy modeling, energy retrofits, high performance design, and commissioning projects for the firm. Mr. Dolan is considered an expert on high performance buildings and sustainable design, speaking frequently to professional and academic organizations throughout the region, including speaking engagements such as the ASHRAE National Meeting in New York, the New York Society of Professional Engineers Annual Conference, and at the Build Boston Conference for the Boston Society of Architects/AIA.
